The Mathmatecum now has three members who have received the entire cost of their memberships back. This after only four years of existence, we are now in our fifth year and anticipate adding at least one more member who will receive the cost of membership back in the coming year. Not knowing how many members there would be, what their ages would be, and the rate of earnings would be, it was not knowable at the outset. Even now trying to guess who and how many members might receive their cost of membership is next to impossible. So, let’s get more members because the more we have the faster members will be made whole.
It’s been 58 years this past week that I first flew on a plane. As I recall it was KLM and the meal was restaurant quality and boy have times changed. My flight was out of the country to Aruba and a passport wasn’t needed. Everything was terrific until landing in Curacao. Upon boarding what was referred to as a small puddle jumper that was to take us to Aruba a twenty-minute flight. Once in the air I noticed that one of the engines was spitting out small flames! I was assured that that was not unusual and to just relax. When we landed, we were met by fire engines, and they sprayed the engines with fire retardant!! I then asked if this was normal procedure on all the flights coming in from Curacao. The attendant smiled and said no only the ones God spared. At that moment I thought I might become a permanent resident of Aruba.
Well things have sure changed since then! I still dress the same for non-business travel: blue jeans and a jean shirt over another shirt. Shoes for me have stopped being a problem because at 75 you are not required to take them off going through security. The check list has changed quite a bit through the years. I now include a charging cord for a cell phone battery for in ear hearing aids, neither of these devices existed back in the mid-sixties. The best change for me is that I no longer get pulled from the security line as I did in the late sixties and early seventies because I was the profile of a highjacker. From May of 1961 to the end of 1972 there were 159 high jacking -130 in the US!
