The Mathmatecum as members know and followers of this blog are aware is now stating its fifth year. I thought I should provide some information as to current status and some history. First, I would like to remind everyone that the overall supposition that formed the basis for the Mathematecum was that it would be possible to make government secured investments averaging at least a 2% return on a yearly basis until the Mathmatecum was concluded and reached a final distribution to surviving members. That was the thought and what follows is the current reality.

Initially first monies in the members fund earned 2.75% per annum. Then in the second-year monies earned an average of 1.63%. Thereafter and fortuitously, the rates went up in six-month increments in the following way 7.12%, 9.62%! Presently the rate is 6.89%. The rate will change shortly on May 1 and though no one knows for sure what it will be, most experts believe it will be less than the last six months.

Followers of this blog already know but it is well worth citing again that if you purchase an I bond before this May 1 you will earn 6.89% for a full six months regardless of what the new rate is.
As of 1/1/23 the membership fund is now 3.7% larger than member contributions would have it be as a result of the yearly earnings retention. If no one else joins the Mathmatecum going forward the members monies will continue to grow year to year.

BIO

“SAINTS” as we called it was in retrospect a bit unreal by today’s standards! However, it certainly was much like movie versions of fifties high schools complete with quintessential gym instructors and teachers. The teachers for us mostly were nuns’, priests, and a few what we called back then lay teachers. Everyone I know has perceptions of life events that are unique to them and what I will recount is how I saw it through my mind’s eye. Being out here in Hawaii, I feel safe from harm if I ruffle a few feathers. I cherish the memories of those years and the people I got to know. Time is usually not kind when remembering. However, with regard to my high school classmates – I now love them all! Even the couple who I wasn’t crazy about way back then!

Thirteen years old and now mingling with kids who drove cars to school – what a shock. Growing up in an almost all Italian neighborhood in Paterson, NJ I was not ready for schoolmates who were by and large almost all taller than me. A bit intimidating to say the least! When I wasn’t avoiding social confrontations, I loved every minute of the social life and couldn’t wait to be at school. Getting to and returning from school however was another story!
