Way out here in Hawaii it’s not too often that we get close family to visit for extended periods of time. I will be getting a visit from a daughter and granddaughter who will be here for a well-deserved vacation, and I will not write this blog again until 2/27/23.

January turned out to be a great month in the stock market exceeding a 10% gain for the month. The risk free Mathmatecum earned 9% – what a great month! Now it seems all the financial experts are split on the up or down calls for the rest of the year. No financial advisers make money if people aren’t buying and selling. You can find two camps: “the bottom will fall out so sell and hide in a CD until the market becomes stable” and “the buy the dip and hold on until the market turns”. If you buy a CD there is no charge to you even if you do it through a broker, the bank pays the broker a fee for placing the CD with them.
Here is my advice. Now is the time to firm up all things financial both short and long term. Being realistic of course is the key. How much to save, when to do that, as well as deciding when the regular contributions should be made. After accumulating monies how they should be invested becomes key. Please note that what we should all do is strive to accumulate generational wealth.

The summer house on Staten Island, NY had as permanent summer residents my maternal grandparents, my cousins’ grandfather, my two aunts and uncles, my parents, and then of course there were nine of us kids! Never a dull moment! Weekends found the house chockablock when the men in the family were all there – the full complement was 19 strong. We had access to a boat for riding and fishing. At least one meal a day had as its main course something we caught (crabs or fish) or something we gathered (mussels or clams).
When I wasn’t doing things as a hunter gatherer or helping in the two gardens, I was on my Sears brand Monarch bike which took me to the nearest year-round towns: Midland beach and New Dorp! There I became quite adept at handball, horseshoes, and I played a bit of baseball. I was the classic last picked for baseball I was never very good at baseball, but I enjoyed it. I was very hard to beat at handball.
