By the beginning of June most high school and college students have graduated and are about to embark on a new life experience. For those who are not planning to go further with their more formal education then it is time to join the work force. Whether a college grad or a high school grad, decisions must be made as to what to do with one’s earnings. Here is what I believe you should do. If you do not already have them as soon as possible open two bank accounts – one for savings and one for checking. I suggest a brick-and-mortar bank as opposed to an online bank so you can develop a personal relationship with individuals at the bank.
In a prior blog I advised that the ideal money management for one’s financial stability and overall comfort would be to allocate income after saving in the following manner: 50% for fixed expenses, 30% for necessities, and 20% for discretionary spending. Savings should start at no less than one hour’s wage per week working up to 20% of total income which is the ideal. Savings of course need to be placed in various investments to maximize their benefit to you.
